Opened to the public in 1968, it is one of the most important in Calabria. The building, designed by the architect Franco Minissi, is located on one of the bastions of the sixteenth-century walls, a stone's throw from the Castle of Charles V, in the historic center of the city. In its most recent layout, inaugurated in 2000, the Museum offers an exhibition itinerary on two floors.
On the ground floor the visitor is guided, according to a chronological criterion, to the discovery of the main historical stages of the ancient Greek city of Kroton, starting from the relationships with the indigenous communities pre-existing at the time of its foundation (second half of the eighth century BC), through the history of its athletes, doctors and philosophers, up to late antiquity. There is also an in-depth study on urban archeology and a section dedicated to the grave goods of the necropolis in the locality of Carrara.
